Wasilla (~9,000 population) is a familiar name (also known from politics) and is located north of Anchorage. The area has a small-town feel but within reach of larger metropolitan amenities; the housing stock is mostly single-family homes, moderate-size lots, some new subdivisions, while still offering access to outdoor recreation (fishing, hiking, etc). Home price estimate: ~$370,500 per earlier data. Building a new home is viable; land may be less expensive than Anchorage core but costs for heating, insulation, cold-weather construction must be considered. Proximity: It is relatively close to Anchorage (within commuting distance for many) which enhances convenience while offering more space.
