Aleutians East Borough occupies a remote stretch of the Alaska Peninsula and several adjacent islands of the eastern Aleutian chain. Its seat is Sand Point. The region is extremely rural, rugged and wild — much of the land is undeveloped, with few towns and large distances between communities. The prominent towns include Sand Point, King Cove, Akutan, Cold Bay and False Pass. According to census-data the population around 3,420 (2020) in a land area of several thousand square miles, making for a very low population density. Historically the area is closely tied to fishing (especially salmon and other seafood), Native (Aleut) communities, and remote island life. The Russian era and then American era of Alaska played out here via fur-hunting, fishing, and later commercial seafood operations. Because of its remoteness, many homes are constructed for weather-resilience (insulated, sturdy siding, often smaller size) and there is also a significant amount of land available for new builds due to the low residential density. The proximity to the nearest large city: the closest “major” city is likely Anchorage (via air or long transit), which is hundreds of miles away and requires air or sea transport; ground road access is minimal or non-existent between the islands and peninsula. Regarding home price ranges: available listings show some very modest older homes from around US$120,000–140,000 in Cold Bay area, and others up to US$399,000 or higher in Sand Point for larger homes. Because of the high cost of shipping materials and remoteness, building a new home would likely cost significantly more per square foot than in more accessible areas — rough estimates might run US$300-400 per square foot or more depending on logistics (very approximate). Overall, buying an existing home might range from around US$120k up to US$400k+ depending on size and location; building new in this remote area might require US$250k–500k or more depending on lot, utilities and shipping.
